2,450 cancer test errors at unit

17th July 2009

An inquiry into the screening of tissue samples for cancer at Wrexham Maelor Hospital has found errors were made in 2,459 cases.

The Health Inspectorate of Wales (HIW) found that in 181 instances, the errors could have had a "definite influence" on treatment. The pathologist at the centre of the investigation retired before the review and the HIW said he declined to take part in their investigation. North Wales NHS Trust has said that changes at the unit had been made.
