£28m of hospital meals are wasted

19th March 2009

Data from the Department of Health has shown that £28 million of hospital meals were not eaten by patients in 2007/08.

In some hospitals one fifth of meals were thrown away. The average cost of a hospital meal was £2.65.

Patients Association vice chair Michael Summers said meals went to waste because they were badly made and unappealing.

"It's short sighted because good nutrition aids recovery," he added.
