3kg tumour removed from 10-year-old girl

15th May 2012

A 10-year-old girl has undergone a nine hour operation to remove an abdominal tumour which weighed over 3kg.

The operation on Eliana Mann was performed at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Eliana's mother Tara told the BBC that the tumour was "took up 50% of her abdomen" and added: "If she didn't have the tumour removed it would end up just growing and growing and growing and it would kill her just by its size."

Surgeon Edward Kiely said: "This type of tumour in this location is very rare - fewer than one per year at Great Ormond Street Hospital."
