90,000 young Brits on sickness benefit

23rd February 2011

Figures show that some 86,000 young British people are on incapacity benefit rather than taking up jobs or training.

A significant portion of the young adults in the 18-24 age group are known to be claiming the benefit within months of leaving full-time education and almost a quarter of the 86,000 claimants have been receiving the payments for five years or more. A breakdown of the data revealed that Birmingham, parts of Scotland and the North of England have the most young incapacity benefit claimants.
