A record 18m register as organ donors

23rd June 2011

NHS Blood and Transplant has revealed that a record 18m people have registered as organ donors in the UK.

That means that now nearly one out of every three people say they are willing to donate their organs, however the organisation says more donors are still needed and added that Black and Asian people had to wait three times longer for a transplant, because of a shortage of donors in those communities. In 2010, more than 1,000 people donated their organs, and 2,700 organs were transplanted across the UK.
