Abbott quits abortion group

27th January 2012

Shadow health minister Diane Abbott has resigned from a cross-party group on counselling given to pregnant women by abortion providers.

The Labour MP has dismissed the cross-party group of 10 MPs as a “front” for those who want it outlawed. The group was set up after the Commons voted last September against proposals by Tory MP Nadine Dorries that would have stopped abortion providers offering counselling to pregnant women. Ms Dorries said Ms Abbott's comments were "nonsense" while Health Minister Anne Milton said she was "disappointed" at Ms Abbott’s move.
