Annual MOT for nurses needed

14th April 2011

Nurses should have annual physical and psychological testing to ensure they are up to the demands of the job.

The Royal College of Nursing conference in Liverpool was told that the check-ups could take place alongside the normal appraisal. Those who needed help should be given support by occupational health teams to tackle problems and nurses claimed there were more checks on basic equipment than on NHS staff. The call comes amid a drive to tackle staff sickness in the NHS, which costs the health service £1.7bn a year.
