Are SATs making our children mentally ill?

22nd September 2008

A headteacher has warned that SAT examinations could cause mental health problems in young children.

Head Diane Watkins says SAT examinations put children as young as seven under stress. She said: "It is no coincidence that we have seen so many more young children with mental health problems and stress in the last few years. Of course, there are other influences but the effect of SATs has been significant. If children start feeling extremely stressed when they are young it is going to stop them learning."
