Automatic organ donation backed

14th January 2008

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has given his support to an overhaul of the current system of organ donation.

Mr Brown is in favour of a policy by which all of the population would "be considered a donor" unless they "explicitly stated otherwise". A task force will this week put forward the idea that every hospital in England should recruit organ donor coordinators. These staff would liaise with "grieving families" to persuade them of the benefits of organ donation.
