Baby dies after being refused hospital admission

23rd July 2012

A baby died after she was unable to be admitted to her nearest hospital because its Accident & Emergency unit was closed at night.

Seven-month old Holly Waters lived only four kilometres from Stafford Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire on 28 June. Mid Staffordshire trust said: "When contacted by the West Midlands ambulance crew, our paediatric ward told the crew that they were unable to accept the baby because they did not have the capacity in the ward and were already dealing with an emergency. As per the agreed protocol, the ambulance crew were directed to take the baby to UHNS."
