Bank charges hike for providers

29th January 2009

Bank charges for foundation trusts could quadruple over the next year as banks raise the costs of providing overdraft facilities.

One foundation trust finance director revealed that Barclays Bank had increased the charge it was proposing to levy its overdraft facility in a way that would see a typical foundation trust's £13m facility rise from £39,000 to £156,000 with arrangement fees and other charge elements. Some NHS finance directors have proposed the Department of Health should set up its own bank for lending between foundation trusts.
