Basildon confirms Legionnaires' cases

8th January 2010

Basildon University Hospital in Essex has stated that two patients have been infected with Legionnaires' disease.

The hospital's chief executive Alan Whittle said one of the patients was still in a critical condition, although both were responding to antibiotics. He added: "We routinely and regularly treat and check the water system and independent audits are carried out to ensure our processes are rigorous. Experts agree that the legionella bacteria is a common risk in large buildings with an extensive plumbing system."
