21st August 2012

People who binge drink and need medical help in Cardiff will be filmed and have the footage shown to them when they are sober.

The three month pilot project will also see drinkers who have 'minor' injuries taken to a triage centre instead of Cardiff's hospital.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board says 60% of the hospital's beds and ambulances are filled with alcohol cases on weekends.

The £85,000 pilot, which has been funded by the government, is aiming to shock drinkers into cutting back on alcohol.

However, the man responsible for the project says noone will be "forced" to watch the footage.

Conrad Eydmann,  head of substance misuse strategy and development for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, explained: "We're looking at securing camera equipment inside the building. There will be a basic capacity to film people on arrival and as they leave."

"Part of that will include the option for individuals to review the video of their arrival. It indicates how alcohol can affect their behaviour."

"Our intention is that the vast majority of people will be surprised and hopefully concerned about the state of their behaviour."

Alcohol Concern Cymru recently published results of a survey which found that a fifth of adults in Wales admitted to binge drinking.
