Blood test for breast cancer patients

6th June 2012

A new blood test has been devised which could help predict the survival chances of breast cancer patients.

The test will help doctors swiftly diagnose whether a patient with early breast cancer faces high risk of death or relapse after treatment, according to the research published in the journal The Lancet Oncology. The presence of one or more circulating tumour cells in the blood predicted early recurrence and decreased overall survival which could identify early which patients might benefit from additional treatment like chemotherapy.
