Boozing linked to breast cancer

23rd April 2007

Female binge drinkers double their risk of breast cancer says new research.

The new study shows a direct link between drinking large amounts of alcohol in a short space of time and a woman’s risk of developing the disease.  Experts found that drinking four or five units on one day increased a woman’s breast cancer risk by 55 per cent but that consuming between 16 and 21 drinks over a weekend increases the risk by a massive 150 per cent.  The figures are so alarming that doctors now believe alcohol consumption is the main culprit behind the country’s soaring breast cancer rates as it is thought that alcohol may increase oestrogen levels in the body.  44,000 new cases of the disease are diagnosed each year resulting in 13,000 deaths.

The study of over 17,000 women proved a direct link between binge drinking and breast cancer.  Women who drank more than their recommended unit allowance over a week were also found to be 130 per cent more likely to develop the disease but it was binge drinking which proved the greatest risk.

A recent Cancer Research UK study estimated around one in 20 cases of breast cancer each year are caused by drinking. But their study also concluded that the risk escalates with several drinks consumed in one episode. Over 20 per cent of the female population in the UK is thought to binge drink.  Dr Alison Ross, from the charity said, "Even small amounts of alcohol can increase the risk of breast cancer."

Absolutely agree on this one, as it's "back to Oestrogen levels again"
One thing I did not know, which is in the report, was that there were "Soaring Breast Cancer Rates." I am very surprised as I thought breast cancer was on the decline!
It just show's a woman has to watch her health in everything in life she does!
