British doctors are best

1st February 2007

British doctors are the best in Europe and earn every penny of their rising wage, according to Prime Minister Tony Blair.

His comments came after being questioned on the hike in wages reported by many GPs since the introduction of the new contract in 2004.

It has been widely reported that some doctors have seen their pay increase by up to 30% with some reportedly earning £250,000. This puts them among the highest earning doctors in Europe.

Mr Blair defended GPs, saying he didn’t see a problem with GPs being the best paid in Europe if they were the best doctors.

His comments came in response to a question from the Labour MP from Cannock Chase, Mike Wright, during prime minister's questions.

Doctors’ leaders have said they did not expect such large rises in pay through the new contract.

Under their new contract, GPs no longer provide out-of-hours cover during evenings and weekends.
