Bug at neo-natal unit kills baby

7th January 2009

One baby has died and six others have been placed in an isolation ward after an infection at the neo-natal unit of the Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham.

The baby, born prematurely almost two weeks ago, was one of two to become infected with Serratia bacteria. The hospital is hopeful the second baby will recover and be able to go home with the next few weeks. Five other babies have tested positive for the bacteria on their skin and have been put in the isolation unit as a precaution.
