Bupa issues affordability warning

9th August 2012

Healthcare group Bupa has warned that lack of competition among private hospitals is leaving the sector in Britain facing an “affordability crunch.”

Chief executive Stuart Fletcher said the cost of treatment in the UK was now double that of Spain and 80pc higher than in Australia and that the affordability issue was arising because the number of people taking up health insurance was declining. It comes as Bupa reported a 5pc rise in pre-tax profits to £255.3m during the six months ending June 30.
