BUPA Wellness Achieves ISO9001:2000 Healthmark Certification

BUPA Wellness has achieved ISO 9001:2000 Healthmark quality management certification across its entire business.

BUPA Wellness is the UK’s leading provider of corporate and preventive health services. It offers a nationwide service to businesses and individuals through over 70 centres and around 20 on-site centres.

“Many of our centres and departments gained ISO 9001:2000 Healthmark certification in 2004 and we decided to extend this to the remainder of our business,? says BUPA Spokeswoman Angela Odell. “Under the Healthmark name, the ISO 9001:2000 standard applies to us because of its focus on the customer, best practice, consistency across the organisation and continuous improvement. It’s good to get all the external audits involved in obtaining and retaining Healthmark, which complement our continual internal audits.?


Healthmark is an internationally recognised ISO 9000-based quality management system certification process for the health and social care sector. It shows that an organisation provides high standards of care – and measures and monitors those standards to ensure continuous improvement.

The Healthmark scheme is wholly owned and provided by SGS, and audits are conducted by registered lead auditors with expertise and training in the health and social care sector.

Healthmark raises an organisation’s profile and helps to differentiate it from its competition. The discipline of following a quality management system improves efficiency, increases staff and customer satisfaction and confidence, and is an excellent risk management tool.    

Assessment, Certification and Checks

Certification body SGS UK Ltd assessed BUPA Wellness for Healthmark. “We chose SGS and have been very pleased with the results,? says Angela Odell. “Since the 10-day Healthmark assessment and the certification that followed, we’ve worked closely with SGS who have provided us with a schedule of audits over the next three years. The SGS team has been incredibly helpful in setting this up and ensuring that auditors visit our various centres over a set period.

“The SGS team is thorough and I’m always impressed at how quickly SGS’s auditors gain an understanding of our business and fit in around our work.?

External Recognition

“It’s great that Healthmark is externally recognised by our customers,? says Angela Odell. “BUPA competes for business in many tenders and being able to say we have this certification is a definite plus.?
