Burnham new health secretary

8th June 2009

The Prime Minister's cabinet reshuffle has resulted in Andy Burnham being named as the new health secretary.

Mr Burnham replaces Alan Johnson, who is now the home secretary. He worked as a health minister in 2006 and put forward the idea of a NHS constitution to Gordon Brown. In a speech to the Fabian Society in 2006 he said: "If I had to sum up in a soundbite what the change of emphasis would be from this decade to the next, it would be this; from quantity to quality."
