C diff linked to 31 deaths at Northern Trust hospitals

21st March 2011

Michael McGimpsey, Northern Ireland's Health Minister, has publicly apologised for failings which caused 31 deaths from the hospital bug Clostridium difficile.

The results of a public enquiry found that the bug caused the deaths of 15 people and was a contributing factor in the deaths of 16 people. "I want to apologise to all those affected by this outbreak and offer my sincere sympathies to those families who lost loved ones. There is no doubt that this 027 strain of C difficile was extremely virulent and caused a great deal of pain and distress to all those affected," the Health Minister said.
