Call for limit on sleeping pill prescriptions

Doctor have been warned to only issue prescriptions of sleeping pills and tranquillisers in exceptional circumstances.

The move has been led by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and 17 other organisations including the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse, the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Department of Health, which together produced the consensus statement, recognising that such drugs can be highly addictive. It also warned that any course of treatment on the drugs should be reviewed on a regular basis.
