Call for PCT cull in London

14th May 2010

Dr Michelle Drage, joint chief executive of Londonwide LMCs, has called for the number of primary care trusts in London to be reduced after claiming existing NHS management structures in the capital are unsustainable.

She criticised the current structure with NHS London in charge of six sector wide organisations and 31 smaller PCTs, and said it should be one of the first areas to target in making cuts in NHS spending. Dr Drage said the multiple layers of management were not needed with government plans to give more commissioning responsibility to GPs.
