Can Dr Brown fix the NHS?

18th February 2010

Dr DJ Brown’s eagerly anticipated guide to patient and staff centred transformation in the healthcare sector, The Meaning of Careful (www.themeaningofcareful.com) has received a warm reception from healthcare professionals. Dr Brown’s innovative approach to creating a more responsive, people centred Health Service and demonstration of how targets can be set locally and decision making devolved back to front line healthcare staff has been well received by NHS staff.

The Meaning of Careful addresses the current climate of Government policy orientation towards a more patient led NHS while responding to current economic constraints. Dr Brown’s hands-on experience on the front line of the NHS and his involvement in managing change in large corporate organisations offers a unique insight on how to improve both patient safety and cost efficiencies while, nurturing staff morale and improving the patient experience.

The Meaning of careful has been endorsed by Sir Gerry Robinson (Can Gerry Robinson Fix the NHS? 2007). Sir Gerry has praised The Meaning of Careful: “Dr Brown’s frontline experience brings a sharp focus to the leadership challenges now facing the NHS. I recommend this book to anyone interested in improving patient care”.

Dr Brown hopes that the Careful Programme described in the book will offer a positive and practical leadership model to meet the need for a more efficient NHS, while continuing to focus on improving patient care. “I hope to demonstrate that by putting people before process and taking a long-term view, it is possible to improve patient care radically and to raise the reputation and financial performance of every healthcare institution in the country.”

Dr Brown will be joint hosting a Seminar at BMA House on “Doing More with Less” (www.doingmorewithless.co.uk) on the 23rd March. The event will offer practical advice on how to cut costs while improving clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. Dr Brown will be speaking on how to engage staff in the process improvements integral to delivering quality healthcare as outlined in The Meaning of Careful.
