Cancer drug payments missed

26th July 2010

A survey of 31 NHS trusts in England has shown that the health service could be missing the chance to be reimbursed for the cost of cancer drugs because of "paperwork".

The survey found that up to 50% of costs had not been recouped by the trusts. Survey co-author David Thomson, lead pharmacist for Yorkshire Cancer Network, said: "I would continue to support any mechanism that improves patients' access to effective cancer drugs at cost-effective prices to the NHS". He added that an "inappropriate amount of NHS staff time" was taken up by bureaucracy.
