Cancer treatments denied

22nd November 2007

The Sun reports that oncologists are not informing patients about treatments that could potentially be life-saving, as they know that NHS trusts will not be able to fund them.

The charity Beating Bowel Cancer discovered the practice when it surveyed 50 specialists. It revealed that over 50% did not tell patients about new therapies.

The charity's chief executive, Hilary Whittaker, said: "We fully empathise with doctors who don't want to raise patients' hopes, but the vast majority want to be told of all treatments".
