Cancer vaccine approved

14032006_SyringePink1.jpg The Associated Press reports that "Women, for the first time have a vaccine to protect them against cervical cancer."

The US Food and Drug Administration have approved use of the vaccine, Gardasil, for use in girls and women ages 9 to 26. The vaccine prevents infection by four strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV, the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease. HPV is thought to be a leading cause of cervical cancer.
