Cancer vaccine approved

The European Union has approved Gardasil, the vaccine for cervical cancer. The UK Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation will now advise the Department of Health whether it should be made available in the NHS.

Gardasil works against human papillomavirus types 6, 11, 16, and 18, which can lead to cervical cancer; it is designed to be given to girls and women aged 9 to 26 years.
