Care pressures warning

27th March 2009

A doctor told an inquest into ten deaths at Hampshire's Gosport War Memorial Hospital that she had told her managers about the pressure staff were under.

Dr Jane Barton said the number of patients she was expected to treat increased substantially in the 1990s. "I raised the issue, saying I couldn't manage this level of care. But of course there was no-one else to do it. I could have said I couldn't do the job any more and walked away, but if I did, I felt I'd be letting down the staff and more importantly my patients."
