Centre for diabetes and obesity

25th June 2007

A new research centre which could lead to better prevention of diabetes and obesity has opened.

The Medical Research Council opened the Epidemiology Unit at North Cambridgeshire Hospital, in Wisbech, to assess volunteers in a lifestyle study of the habit of 5,000 local people to determine factors that can lead to obesity and diabetes.

The prevalence of diabetes in the area is at 4.2% compared to the national average of 3.3%. Unit director Prof Nick Wareham said the new facility would provide opportunities for ground-breaking research.
