Chemo during pregancy is safe

16th August 2012

A new study has suggested that pregnant women who develop cancer can have chemotherapy without endangering their unborn child.

Researchers have found that women who received treatment for cancer during pregnancy had no greater risk of having children with birth defects or other health issues. The findings, published in the Lancet Oncology journal, emerged from a study of more than 400 women from across Europe who were diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer while pregnant with almost half undergoing chemotherapy during pregnancy.
