Children exercising less

28th September 2009

Research carried out by the British Heart Foundation has found that a mere one in eight children is exercising for an hour a day.

A child is recommended to be physically active for at least sixty minutes every day. However, the survey of over 1,000 children aged between eight and 15 discovered that one fifth believed a person should only exercise if they were overweight.

One third of the children surveyed said they exercised for less than sixty minutes a week.

The BHF are promoting the Food4Thought campaign, which targets obese children aged between 11-13. It is crafted in order to get children to think about how much exercise they take and how what they eat affects their health.

Predictions based on research indicate that two thirds of children in the UK could be "overweight or obese" by 2050.

Dr Mike Knapton, director of prevention and care at the BHF said: "We have a generation of kids growing up who have a shockingly blase attitude towards exercise and being active."

"Young people need to switch off their square eyes and get in the habit of exercising now."

Former Olympic champion Sally Gunnell has given her support to the campaign. She said: "Children's sluggish attitude towards daily exercise is worrying and it's great to see the BHF thinking of new ways to get them intrigued and active again."

that sounds about right, children nowdays are so lazy at moving around you can't even ask them to go and get a glass of water. instead they tell you to do it yourself, and while you're there get them one too. parents should stop buying their children every computer game that has come out, and spend some time with them down the park or take them swimming instead. dads can also play football with their sons, and mums can go swimming with the girls. and suggest a little treat afterwards.
