Children's inactivity 'epidemic'

29th May 2007

Inner-city children's lack of physical activity has reached "epidemic" levels, according to a large study.

Researchers from the University of Leicester studied 3,500 children from schools in the city. They discovered many children do not exercise every day and only 50% walk to school. Half played computer games or watched television for over four hours a day. Researcher Professor Kamlesh Khunti said: "Parents, schools and community health providers need to address the results of these findings to reduce their future risks of developing diabetes and heart disease in children."
