China ups disease control

10th April 2007

The Chinese authorities have announced plans to set aside thousands of hospital beds in the capital in case of disease outbreaks during the 2008 Olympic Games, state media reported.

The Beijing Disease Prevention and Control Centre said the city would have 6,350 beds and 144 hospitals equipped to diagnose and treat infectious diseases like bird flu and SARS, the official Xinhua news agency said.

China is a major centre for bird flu outbreaks among poultry, and the international community has watched its disease reporting procedures closely since an embarrassing cover-up of the 2002 SARS outbreak which infected thousands around the world and killed 800.
