Chronic back pain could be eased by new gel

A team of scientists from the University of Manchester say they have invented an injection that could ease chronic back pain for millions of sufferers.

The team has developed a gel which repairs damaged spinal discs and writing in the journal Soft Matter, they say they have discovered how to permanently replace the workings of the invertebral disc with microscopic spongelike particles which inflate and gel together to repair worn-away discs. It is estimated that back pain affects 80% of people at some point in their lives.
