Cloud computing, a new approach to data management?

19th August 2011

Mike Denis, director of information strategy at South London and Maudsley Foundation Trust, part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre, suggests cloud computing can revolutionise the management of patient data.

Storing personal music and photo collections and having them available from various mobile devices is not new.

While such choices have not been available when it comes to personal healthcare information, that could change as the NHS learns from the US model of developing health information systems which are based around the patient.

Moving on from the various electronic medical record systems that have evolved across the NHS, the need is now to transform data into "information and intelligence to drive transformative health programmes".

The National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health has an example of this with a new technological application which enables researchers to search the 170,000 entries on South London and Maudsley Foundation Trust’s electronic patient records system at the touch of a button.

The Microsoft HealthVault is a system being implemented, with patients - as future users - designing the system with clinicians.

With Microsoft, we have been able to make available a personal online health record for patients that will empower them to shape and influence their treatment plans.

A world first for mental health care, the idea is a system in which the specialist mental health clinician, the patient and their GP are all able to collaborate through the on-line health record with secure access enabled and controlled by the patient.

Central to this is the transformation in the way information is accessed, collected, and used by the NHS with cloud computing offering a new approach for the NHS to manage patient data.
