Consortia staff to be limited

10th March 2011

Restrictions are set to be placed on the number of staff new NHS consortia can employ directly.

The NHS Commissioning Board will build measures into the authorisation process over staff and it is likely to encourage consortia to rely on support units developed from primary care trust clusters. However, early indications are that the plan would be unwelcome to some GPs - particularly those in larger consortia - who believe they may have more control of commissioning if they employ their own staff.
