Consultants take industrial action

21st May 2007

Consultants have started industrial action at hospitals in Ireland as part of a dispute over new contracts. The Irish Hospital Consultants Association is taking the action following the decision to recruit 68 specialists on new contracts before agreement on new terms and conditions has been reached.

Members are boycotting management meetings and will refuse to do work that would normally have been carried out by locums. But they insist that patient care will not be affected, despite health minister Mary Harney claiming that it would.
