Conviction for assisted suicide

9th September 2006

An appeal court in Holland has upheld the conviction of the founder of suicide support group De Einder, Jan Hilarius, for helping a 25 year old woman to kill herself. He had offered written instructions on suicide and medication.

However, his sentence was reduced from 12 to four months because of his age and previous unblemished record. Dutch euthanasia laws allow only doctors to assist suicide.
