Cost of free social care underestimated

1st February 2010

Council heads have said the government has not calculated the cost of providing social care correctly.

According to a poll of 61 social services directors, the cost of giving care was £200 a week - twice the government's estimate. The Association of Directors of Adult Social Services  president Jenny Owen said the "pressures on local government will clearly be well above the sum estimated. We are keen to meet with the department to help clarify and resolve these outstanding issues."
