Creative England launches its first investment fund for NHS apps

13th March 2013
Today (Wed 13 March) at Innovation Healthcare Expo 2013, in collaboration with the NHS Commissioning Board and Creative Skills for Life™ (CSL), Creative England launches a £250k investment fund from the Government’s  Regional Growth Fund, designed to support app and content development aimed at the health and well being market in the UK.

Committed to opening up practical opportunities for creative businesses to work with business clusters in other sectors, this is the FIRST TIME that Creative England’s focus has been specifically on healthcare.

In April, Creative England will invite applications from SME’s for this fund, totalling £250,000, to create health and wellbeing related apps aimed at NHS customers. The NHS Commissioning Board (NHS CB) will assist with outlining the key priority areas such as those enabling the outcomes framework and NHS CB planning guidance, and the NHS CB and CSL along with senior representatives from leading NHS Trusts, will provide input into the assessment of the applications.

It is anticipated that the competition, managed by Creative England, will result in the support of 5 new healthcare apps - part funded 50% with each SME. The investment will take the form of revenue sharing agreements between the SME and Creative England.

Creative England’s core mission is to unlock potential for small businesses in the creative industries, and help them take advantage of the massive opportunities presented by the digital revolution.  As the SME will own all the IP relating to the product, the company will have valuable competitive advantages that can improve its ability to grow and generate revenue.

Creative England’s Director of Business Development, Jim Farmery, said: Creative England is always looking to link creative businesses into new market opportunities and this partnership with the NHS National Commissioning Board and Creative Skills for Life™ will provide a great stepping stone for the companies selected.”

Alex Abbott Chief Technology Officer, from the NHS Commissioning Board said, “This scheme is a fantastic opportunity for SMEs to help them in creating a sustainable business model and would encourage the SME community to get involved.”

Ian Spero, Founder, Creative Skills For Life™ commented, “Creative England’s enthusiastic and on-going encouragement has been instrumental in the development of Creative Skills for Life™. We are now looking forward to receiving some exciting creative ideas for apps that will enable young people facing potentially isolating situations to explore their creative potential and engage with a wider world in new, more meaningful ways.”

This exciting new Interactive Healthcare initiative is funded by Creative England’s Regional Growth Fund, part of the £5 million secured to stimulate new jobs and growth in the digital and creative industries in areas of high unemployment.
