Cure for blindness a step closer

Scientists at Southampton University have discovered a "mutant gene" which strongly heightens the danger of blindness caused by age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The condition is suffered by around 25,000 people in the UK annually. The discovery of the Serping1 gene was said by study leader Professor Andrew Lotery to represent a "paradigm shift" in ways of considering AMD.
