Dental software detects osteoporosis

6th March 2008

New software that can detect osteoporosis via routine dental x-rays is to be commercialised by the University of Manchester.

The software – Osteodent - was developed by a team of the university’s academics and will be sold after a deal was brokered with Swedish company Crebone AB. The software can increase detection rates of osteoporosis, which can be treated effectively if identified early. A recently-published study of 670 women’s x-rays in the UK, Sweden, Belgium and Greece demonstrated the effectiveness of Osteodent.
