Department of Health awards £3.6 million to charities28th February 2011
106 charities around the country will today receive a share of £3.6 million from the Department of Health, Health Secretary Andrew Lansley and Care Services Minister Paul Burstow announced.
The money is part of a Financial Assistance Fund set up to support charities, which would not otherwise have survived to the end of the financial year. This will enable these organisations to continue their valuable work and supporting thousands of people with a whole range of needs. To qualify for funding, organisations must have robust plans in place for future funding and:
- Contribute to the delivery of DH objectives which no other organisation could provide in the short to medium term;
- Deliver health and/or social care activity and/or support which no other organisation could provide in the short term; and that there will be a considerable knock-on effect on other front line services if the organisation ceased to exist.
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said:
“This money will help many organisations keep providing valuable support and services for thousands of people. It is part of the Coalition’s commitment to support the voluntary and community sector and recognition of the valuable role they play.
“Charities play an important role in our vision for the Big Society and it is right that in these difficult economic circumstances we should give short-term support to organisations which are helping to support health and care services. This support will ensure that strong, independent voluntary organisations survive and are able to prepare for future opportunities that will be opened up by public service reform.”
Care Services Minister Paul Burstow said:
"Central Government can’t do everything people want in their communities – local people are better placed than officials or Ministers in Whitehall to know what their communities need. This is about a new relationship between the state and citizens, where citizens hold more power than ever before.
"By providing this money to the organisations that are already working closely with their local community on a daily basis we're helping to provide services that are shaped around individual needs. We would like to thank all these charities for the important work they do in supporting people with a wide range of health and social care needs."
Sue Adams, Chief Officer of North Tyneside Disability Forum said:
"We are delighted to have received funding for Disability Forum. It means we can continue to provide supported activities to disabled and vulnerable people, enabling them to stay independent and active and access quality of life needs: aids and adaptations, benefits and entitlements, appropriate housing and care support, to ensure their social, emotional, physical and financial wellbeing. Over 250 people per week rely on our services and without this money we would not have been able to continue to support them all.”
This money will help organisations, which need money immediately to continue their valuable work this financial year. This complements the £100 million transition fund recently announced by the Prime Minister to help organisations from April onwards.
Charities, voluntary groups and social enterprises can have a powerful role in mobilising community action and helping people to drive change, to take over local facilities that are not being used properly and make sure that local issues are not ignored. The funding we will deliver will allow them to seize these opportunities.
