Diabetes drug helps weight loss

23rd October 2009

Research has indicated that an injection designed for diabetics can help overweight patients lose almost 16lbs in five months.

The findings make the drug called victoza twice as effective as some obesity drugs. Launched in July, the injection is designed to help prevent thousands of type 2 diabetes patients from having hypoglycaemic attacks, where their blood sugar levels fall too low.

However, a study in which it was compared to the anti-obesity pill, orlistat, showed victoza led to greater weight loss.
