Diabetes eased by chamomile tea?

A new study has said that if people who have type 2 diabetes drink chamomile tea then it could help to stop some of the complications of the disease.


The team was composed of researchers from the UK and Japan, published their research  in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

They gave chamomile to diabetic rats. They found the rats' blood glucose levels were "significantly" reduced and they appeared to demonstrate that the enzyme aldose reductase - which can contribute to diabetic complications - was blocked.

People who suffer from type 2 diabetes show increased amounts of aldose reductase as glucose levels go up.

This enzyme converts glucose "into a sugar alcohol called sorbitol". Sorbitol collects in high quantities in the body and can cause "serious damage" to eye and nerve cells.

The number of people around the globe who suffer from type 2 diabetes is increasing.

The team gave chamomile extract to the rats over a 3-week period and evaluated the figures against rats given a regular diet.

Dr Victoria King, of the charity Diabetes UK, said: "More research would be needed before we can come to any firm conclusions about the role chamomile tea plays in fighting diabetes-related complications.

"Diabetes UK wouldn't recommend people with diabetes increase their chamomile tea intake just yet."
