Diabetes rate soars to nearly 3m in the UK

28th October 2011

Cases of diabetes in the UK have risen to almost 3m.

Diabetes UK said the number of people with the condition has increased by nearly 130,000 to 2.9 million in the past year, a rise of almost 50% since GPs first published diabetes data in 2005.

The rise is mainly in cases of type 2 diabetes  with the charity warning that diabetes 2 commonly develops in people who are overweight, but can affect those with a large waist, aged over 40, having a family history of the condition, or being from ethnic communities.
