Diabetes testing confusion

3rd September 2007

A researcher has warned that people with diabetes may not be monitoring their blood sugar at home because of confusion over how to use the results.

Dr Elizabeth Peel surveyed 18 type 2 diabetes patients over 4 years. She said some doctors did not pay attention to home records, which added to patients' confusion. Home tests enable patients to check their blood sugar levels.

Dr Peel said doctors needed to give guidance to their diabetic patients to help them understand the benefits of home monitoring. She said: "If patients cannot understand their blood glucose fluctuations they cannot modify their behaviour."
