Digital retinopathy roll-out

24th August 2007

The NHS in Scotland has completed the national roll–out of its diabetes digital retinopathy screening service.

The screening uses web-based e-health technology from Siemens Medical Solutions to help identify diabetic retinopathy, which is a significant cause of blindness and represents a major workload for the health service. With appropriate ophthalmological screening it is estimated that blindness may be prevented in up to 70% of such cases.

In 2006 there were an estimated 150,000 diabetic people in Scotland, a figure projected to double by 2010.
