Disposable medical detection kits

18th October 2007

A research team at St Andrews University have patented new technology which uses bank card-sized kits to test for some cancers.

Professors Thomas Krauss and Krishan Dholakia are working on the kits, which could prove much faster and less expensive than current testing methods. A tiny amount of a subject's blood is placed on a card and is then analysed by a larger device.

The kit's size means it could be easily used at GP practices. Professor Krauss added: "By being mass-producible, the devices will also be disposable, thus avoiding problems of cross-contamination".
